The Record Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, established in 1878, invites you to join. Its object is the advancement of public education and interest in the history of the Counties of Lancashire and Cheshire by means of the transcription, editing and publication of original historical texts relating to the two counties. The Society has published over 140 volumes on a wide range of subjects, making the region's history more easily accessible.

Reasons to join the Society are set out in our Vision and Mission

Membership is open to all on the basis of an annual subscription, £20 for individuals in the UK and £25 for overseas individuals, £25 for UK institutions and £30 or US$60 for institutions outside the UK. All subscribing members receive a copy of the volume produced for each year and can purchase titles from our list of past publications. The Society encourages the submission of transcriptions of historical texts and records for publication.

Support us

As a charitable organisation of over 140 years’ standing, the Record Society relies for its survival on members’ subscriptions and book sales. If you would like to support the Society, to help us continue to make the history of Lancashire and Cheshire accessible for another 140 years, this can be done in a number of ways: becoming a member, making a donation, or leaving a legacy. Because the Society is a registered charity, legacies are exempt from Inheritance Tax.

If you are interested in supporting the Society in any of these ways, please contact us by emailing enquiries@rslc.org.uk.

Data Protection

The Society's policy in relation to data protection is available here.

The Society is a member of the Lancashire Local History Federation and its regular newsletter is sent via email to individual members who have provided an email address.

Any member who would like to receive the LLHF newsletter can let us know by emailing enquiries@rslc.org.uk

Former members' copies of publications

The Society has recently received a request from the personal representatives of a deceased member to accept that member’s collection of Society publications with a view to resale. Regrettably we cannot accede to this request. We have no storage facility of our own and the cost of storing the society’s own back stock exceeds the annual revenue derived from the sale of back volumes.

What the Society can do in an effort to help in these circumstances is to make it known via its website that volumes are available for sale and put prospective purchasers in touch with vendors to arrange an appropriate transaction.
